A Paper Eliza Love Story
Virginia and Jack Hayles, living in Nashville, Tennessee, and married on April 26, 2025
How did you and your husband meet?
Virginia Hayles: We got set up by my mother-in-law and her best college friend, who was my mentor! I attended a fundraiser my mentor Ann put on and Kitsie (Jack's mom) was seated at my table. Afterwards, Ann told me she had someone to set me up with, but I had heard that many, many times before so didn't get my hopes up.
Ann and Kitsie got to scheming afterwards, and Ann sent my contact information to Jack. Jack made the connection that we had actually attended summer camp together at age 16 (lol) but we had not spoken since (he also unfollowed me on instagram because he "never thought he would see me again") - jokes on him because now he wakes up next to me every morning. I was in Atlanta at the time, and Jack in Dallas. Jack was very against long distance dating and flying to Atlanta to take me on a date (he is very practical). Kitsie thankfully insisted, saying that it was what she wanted for her birthday and that she would pay for his flight. He told me he'd be in town "for a work trip", we went on our first date, and the rest is history folks!
Was it love at first site?
VH: At 16? Absolutely not - our frontal lobes were so far from being fully developed.
At 24? Still no. We both say we were very intrigued by the other person and knew something was different about them. Not love at first sight but more like interest? I remember laying in bed the next morning with my roommate (and bestie) Anne Henley and we both remarked that he "has good bones" - we didn't know that much about him but the foundation seemed strong from what we knew.
where was your first date?
VH: At Storico Fresco in Atlanta! I had a dirty martini and we split a bottle of wine (oops) so the date then progressed to Moe's and Joe's in Virginia Highlands where we met up with friends. I also committed to hosting a pool party at our house the next day, so my roommates and I made margaritas and had over Jack and his friends. I was hungover and called my mom crying afterwards because I thought I was awkward and messed it up.
where was your first kiss?
VH: At one of my best friends Cameron's house!
how did you know he was the one?
VH: A few months after we first started dating, I went to Nashville to visit his family over Thanksgiving weekend. I definitely had an inkling he was the one after the first few dates, but that weekend really solidified it for me.
I always prayed my husband would be someone who was "in the world but not of the world". His faith came up naturally during conversation but I got to see how he lived it out when we spent time with his family and friends in the place where we grew up. He evidently was a constant in both his family and friend's lives. I could tell Jack lived the way he claimed to. I also realized his humility after that weekend - I learned all these great things about him not by him trying to prove anything to me, but how other people bragging on him.
I called my parents on the way back to Atlanta and was like “hey, this could be it.” My dad freaked out.
who said they loved each other first?
VH: Me! Jack told me a few months into dating that he wouldn't tell a girl he loved her until he proposed because he held those words so highly.
I remember walking on the beach with one of my best friends Piper being like okay I think I am going to tell him anyways? So then I did.
what is your proposal story?
VH: Jack's parents had recently bought a home in Sea Island and he called me one Sunday evening and said “hey, my parents want me to come help them move in things to the new house next weekend - would you want to come with me?” At this point, I was traveling almost weekly for work and was SO tired of being on a plane, but I begrudgingly said yes.
I flew down that Thursday night, and spent the night at their family friend's house with Jack's parents. My in-law's house didn't have any beds in it yet and Jack was in Dallas for work and flying in on Friday afternoon. I remember having a packed work day on that Friday. Jack got to Sea Island while I was still on calls, so he came and sat on the couch next to me.
He was being a little weird but I didn't think that much of it because he gets antsy when he travels. Right after I got off a call with my boss, he insisted we go on a beach walk. Again, didn't think that much of it because he had just gotten off an airplane. I went upstairs to change because I had on a sweater over my workout crop top to be "camera on". If you've ever been to Sea Island, we were on beach side and they have little walkways for each street to have beach access. We got a few steps past that, when Jack told me he loved me, and at that point, I knew he was proposing!
After that, I blacked out. Jack told me it took me awhile to say yes... he also pulled out the ring out of his pocket (no box) and it still felt fake?? Both our parents were hiding in the dunes and came out after he popped the question. We spent the weekend the 6 of us which was so special! That was our first night in the new house and we hope to bring our family there for many years to come. Can't wait to show our kids where mom and dad got engaged!
